They named the farm Persimmon Hill Farm based on the abundance of persimmon trees near the main house which was located on an elevated site. Joseph Pollinger purchased the property in 1995. Lee Bassett was responsible for multiple improvements including renovation of the original farm house, construction of the barn next to the house, planting of the blueberry orchard, construction of four ponds and a barn, where he housed sheep. Hume Clayton sold the property to Bobby Crawford, who in turn sold it to Lee Sterling Bassett. James’ grandparents passed in the early 1970’s, and the farm was purchased by Hume Clayton. James and his family moved to a newly built house located adjacent to current farm. Water for this cabin was carried over from the main well. James was born in 1944 in a cabin that was located just above the current apple trellises. James’ grandmother had her own tobacco field, located below the current picnic shelter. Electric power did not reach the farm until 1961, The homestead had a hand-dug well. Overby’s grandfather did not use tractors, which he believed compacted the soil. They grew tobacco on a 6-7 acre allotment, and also supported their family with two milk cows which they fed with corn grown on the farm. In the 1940’s the land was owned by the grandparents of our neighbor, James Overby.
